Description

THE SILVERTON, OPHIR & SAN MIGUEL TOLL-ROAD

COMPANY Colorado stock certificate #84 issued 1884

Colorado tollroad stock certificate #84, issued April 29, 1884, cancelled by Company.

Signed by S. D. Whittenmore, as president, and J. P. Newell, as secretary.

History on the Company represented by this certificate is somewhat illusive; however, after its incorporation in March 1882, the Company may have acquired the Silverton, Ophir & Rico Tollroad, which was established in 1879.  Numerous toll-roads were cut into Colorado’s San Juan Mountains before Otto Mears began building his railroads.  In fact, Otto Mears began his railroading career as a builder of some of the most precarious toll-roads in and around the Silverton Mining District.  Allan Nossaman, one of the most thorough historians of the Silverton Mining District does not mention THE SILVERTON, OPHIR & SAN MIGUEL TOLL-ROAD COMPANY OF COLORADO, although he does mention many others.

Near fine condition; usual two folds, a bit of light discoloration in the right-hand fold.
