LA PLATA MINING AND SMELTING COMPANY, Leadville Mining District, Lake County, Colorado stock certificate #A5466, issued July 2, 1881, not cancelled by the Company.
Accompanied by a William Henry Jackson cabinet card photograph, circa 1881.
Stock certificate in very good plus condition, folds.
Cabinet card photograph dimensions: 7 inches by 4-1/2 inches. Lightly faded, yet still has very good plus to fine detail. Sign on smelter, “La Plata Mining & Smelting Company” visible.
Company owned the Oro La Plata claim in California Gulch, about two miles from Leadville. Claim located in 1877. Carbonate ore in decomposed porphyry gangue, milling, after being sorted, twenty-five percent lead and from 10 to fifteen ounces of silver per ton. Developed by 150 feet of shafts and tunnels.
Company also owned a smelting works in California Gulch, near Leadville, comprising a smelting building with 6 blast and 1 reverberatory furnace. 150-horse-power engines. Capacity: 175 tons of ore per day.
