THE GOLD CRATER MINING COMPANY, Cripple Creek Colorado mining stock certificate 1899

Certificate #184, issued November 16, 1899, not cancelled.

Signed by W. S. Stratton as president and William A. Ramsay as secretary.

This certificate was issued by gold baron, Winfield Scott Stratton’s for mining property he thought pertinent to his “Bowl of Gold” concept.  A geographical and topographical area within the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District wherein he believed was located the core of an extinct volcano that had formed the District.  Stratton derived his hypothesis after studying Cross and Penrose’s report on the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District published by the United States Geological Survey, 1894, and gathering other crucial information from various mining engineers who’d worked in Cripple Creek.  Stratton was convinced that the majority of the District’s gold-bearing veins stemmed from the central formation of that volcano.  Stratton worked out that that central core surfaced in the vicinity of Gold and Globe hills.  Then, he began purchasing mining properties in a specific vicinity between those two hills and placing them under the development work of the Gold Crater Company.  Stratton was determined to find that central core of the extinct Cripple Creek volcano.

Fine condition.

In 1900, according to Hills’ Cripple Creek Manual, the Company owned the Globe, Close Shave, Lady Stith, Deerhorn, Deerhorn No. 2, and Pride of the Rockies, 35 acres.  Company also owned the Callie, on Gold Hill, adjoining the Anaconda Mine.

A veryt significant Cripple Creek stock certificate.  Signed by the best known and most eccentric of Cripple Creek gold barons.
