VIRGINIA GOLD AND SILVER MINING COMPANY, stock certificate #126

Issued January 15, 1883, not cancelled by the Company.

Company owned the Virginia Group of mining claims — Virginia, West Virginia and Virginia Tunnel — on Yank’s Peak (now called, Avery Peak), near the Town of Gothic, Elk Mountain Mining District, Gunnison County, Colorado.

Mine produced ore containing ruby silver, wire silver, and black sulphurets, ina quartz gangue.  184 ounces of silver per ton.  

Developed by a tunnel and a shaft; and also a 70-foot incline.

Thomas M. Avery was president.  Samuel W. Allerton was treeasurer.  J.H. Cutter was secretary.  C. O. Avery was general manager.

Thomas Avery, at the time, was president of the Elgin Watch Company.  Samuel Allerton was also a prominent Chicago businessman.  Both Avery and Allerton owned interests in the Virginia Mine as well as the Sylvanite Mine (Ruby Silver Mining and Smelting Company).  They also financed the construction of a reduction mill near the Town of Gothic.
