Description
SILVERTON RAILROAD COMPANY, Pass #277, issued for the year 1888
Original Buckskin railroad pass, as issued by Otto Mears and The Silverton Railroad Company, 1888
Issued G. H. Stoiber, proprietor of The Stoiber Sampling Works, Silverton, Colorado
Stoiber would also become president of The Bank of Silverton, as well as president of The Iowa Gold Mining & Milling Company, in the Silver Lake Mining District, above Silverton, San Juan County, Colorado.
This original buckskin pass was signed by Otto Mears, as president of The Silverton Railroad Company, issued to G. H. Stoiber, and originally signed by Stoiber on the back of the pass. The OTTO MEARS signature has NOT been “re-inked,” it is as Otto Mears signed it in 1888; and, the same is true for the Gustav H. Stoiber signature on the back of the pass.
Few of these original buckskin Silverton Railroad Company passes survive today, and even fewer have survived without the original OTTO MEARS signature being re-touched in some manner.
Pass dimensions: 2.5 inches by 4 inches
Pass Lithograpy: John Morris Company, Chicago, Illinois
Condition: near fine; red ink markings appear to also have been original to this pass, either executed by an employee at the Silverton Railroad Company or Gustav Stoiber.
