Douglass City, Colorado came into being due to construction on the Hagerman Tunnel, a project that bore through the Continental Divide at 11,528 feet above sea level. The tunnel was built for the COLORADO MIDLAND RAILROAD, partially financed by JAMES J. HAGERMAN.
After the Hagerman Tunnel was completed, Douglass City eroded into Colorado’s
past.
