DENVER & RIO GRANDE RAILROAD on LA VETA PASS, COLORADO, 1882

LA VETA PASS

(SANGRE de CHRISTO RANGE)

COLORADO

THE DENVER & RIO GRANDE RAILWAY

THE SCENIC LINE OF AMERICA

circa 1882

Original mammoth-sized albumen photograph

 (20 inches by 17 inches)

by

WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON

Condition:

Tones are strong, as are the contrasts, resulting in exceptional definition and drama.  Overall image is a shade light.

There is some roughness present on the margins of the image where the original outer mat was removed.  Some damage to the upper left-hand side of the margin is evident, upon study, also a result of upper mat removal.

Otherwise, this is an exceptional photograph of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway’s Kokomo engine in the early 1880s by one of the superb photographers of the American West, William Henry Jackson.
