The scene at the Smuggler Mine in the Aspen Silver District, 1904. Not long after the mine’s water pumps stopped, the Smuggler’s deep workings were quickly flooded. David M. Hyman, owner of the Smuggler Mine, hired deep-sea divers to enter the mine’s under-water drifts and re-start the pumps. The successful implementation of this innovational solution kept the Smuggler and Mollie Gibson mines producing silver for many years to come.
